Onshore Tug Master Operative

Lerwick | Supporting Shetland’s lifeline NorthLink ferry service

Experienced with large vehicles? Put your skills to work at the port.
From farming and transport to heavy vehicle operations, your experience could be a great fit for our team supporting the Serco NorthLink contract. We offer Tug Master training, opportunities to develop and a conversation about shift patterns that could work for you.

Looked at this role before? Take another look. If the rota put you off, or you weren’t sure your background fitted, we’d welcome an informal chat.

A working pattern worth discussing

Our current rota is 9 days on, 3 days off with some days having a split shift element within the rota. We’re open to exploring alternatives, that might fit within the shift framework and operational requirements, and personnel recruited.  (4on-4off, 6on-6off, etc)

The role

This is an onshore, hands-on role helping keep Lerwick’s ferry operations moving safely and smoothly. Working with your colleagues, you’ll:

  • Operate a Tug Master to move trailers on and off vessels.
  • Assist with mooring and letting go vessels.
  • Marshal freight and passenger vehicles on and off ferries.
  • Keep port areas clean and safe, and stow chaining equipment in designated areas.
  • Follow operating and safety procedures, and train on new equipment and systems.
What you’ll bring
  • Experience operating large vehicles or machinery, such as HGVs, Tug Masters, agricultural machinery or other large plant.
  • A reliable, adaptable approach, with safety at the heart of your work.
  • Good communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work calmly with others under pressure.
  • A willingness to follow structured procedures and learn new skills.
  • You live within a short commuting distance of Lerwick.

New to port work? Your experience may still fit. Port or logistics experience is an advantage, not a requirement. A full clean driving licence is essential, holding Class C+E licence or ADR qualification would also be an advantage. Tug Master training is provided.

Training, development and benefits

Build on the skills you already have with Tug Master training, ongoing coaching and career development. As we plan for the team’s future, there are also opportunities to progress within the role.

  • Company pension and life assurance.
  • Wellbeing cash plan covering dental care, eye tests, health screening and more.
  • Cycle-to-work scheme and Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for additional hours and overtime, subject to operational demand.
Interested? Let’s talk.
