About us

Risk management at Damen underwent a significant advancement at Group level by the end of 2019, with the establishment and implementation of the Risk Board process. This milestone marked a substantial step forward in the structured and professional application of risk management across the organization. The Risk Board, an independent advisory body, supports the Executive Board in decision-making for all projects exceeding a defined contract value threshold during the commercial stage of the project lifecycle.

At division level, risk management is actively applied and is increasingly integrated into Damen’s daily operations. For each project, risks are carefully identified by a multidisciplinary team, and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented to minimize potential impacts on the organization. While the divisions are responsible for implementing risk management processes, the Group Risk Management team defines the overarching framework to which divisions must adhere and provides support where necessary.

Specific projects may require the dedicated involvement of a Risk Manager—whether due to customer requirements or project complexity. This involvement may span the commercial phase, the operational phase, or both, ensuring that risks are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle.

The role

As a Risk Manager at Damen Shipyards Group, you will play a vital role in managing and mitigating risks throughout the lifecycle of (shipbuilding) projects across various divisions and entities within the organization. You will oversee comprehensive risk analysis, ensuring that operational, financial, and other types of risks are effectively identified, prioritized, and addressed. Your expertise will promote accountability and informed decision-making, fostering clear communication and proactive risk management with all stakeholders.

Key accountabilities
In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive risk assessments across all project stages, identifying key risks (operational, financial, and others) and proposing effective mitigation strategies.
  • Leading risk workshops with stakeholders to evaluate, prioritize, and assign ownership of risks, fostering accountability and collaboration.
  • Developing and maintaining a detailed risk register, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and providing regular updates to support informed decision-making.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of an enterprise risk management framework, ensuring consistency and integration across divisions.
  • Analyzing trends in risk data to identify recurring themes, recommend strategic improvements, and document lessons learned to improve future practices.
  • Promoting a risk-aware culture within the organization by embedding proactive risk management into processes and encouraging clear communication across teams.

Skills & experience
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering, Naval Architecture, Business Administration) and 3–5 years of experience in risk management or a related field, preferably within shipbuilding, manufacturing, or other technically complex industries.
  • Proven experience in operational and financial risk assessments, implementing mitigation strategies, and familiarity with enterprise risk management frameworks and standards such as ISO 31000.
  • Proficiency in using risk management tools, analyzing trends in risk data, and providing actionable insights to support decision-making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Dutch, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and present clear, concise updates to stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational abilities to manage multiple projects and deadlines, a proactive approach to risk identification, and adaptability to changing circumstances.
  • Leadership qualities to guide teams through risk workshops and ensure effective implementation of risk strategies.
