Dynamic global hull bending moment increase as a result of hull stiffness mission equipment interaction.
Royal IHC has been working on the basic design of a next-generation offshore vessel. The proposed pipelay vessel will be capable of installing complex flowlines in water depths up to 3,000m. Most pipelay vessels have a tower amidships. This has been found to cause the wave bending moment and the dynamic bending moment - induced by vertical accelerations on the pipelay tower - to be out of phase. This results in the wave bending moment counteracting the dynamic bending moment caused by accelerating the tower due to the ship motions.
For the new vessel, the location of the pipelay tower is not amidships. In this case, the wave bending moment and the tower induced dynamic bending moment to appear to be in phase. The survival accelerations on the tower are obtained by using wave scatter analysis. However, the rule of the wave bending moment does not separately account for the contributions of the dynamic wave bending moment and static wave bending moment. Therefore, we are looking for a motivated graduate student who has a passion for hydro-elasticity or the construction of offshore vessels. You will relish the opportunity to investigate the contribution of different phenomena to the total design with regards to the wave bending moment. You will also explore the effect of the different contributions to the wave bending moment of large mission equipment at various positions on the ship. Nature of proceedings: Literature reseach, FEM, modeling.
To be eligible for this position, you must have:
- a maritime engineering or offshore academic higher education (WO)
- an affinity for design and engineering.
