Alternative Barge Mooring System & Design and Engineering Internship
For different types of ship, it is often necessary to moor a barge to the vessel. For example, a dredger will need this to happen to transport sand or when a new cable is delivered to a pipelayer. Currently, this happens with bunches, which can produce potentially dangerous situations. The throwing/catching of these, and the ever-increasing and decreasing forces that arise on the wire from the independent movements of the vessels, produce a constant risk that the wire will fail, which has extremely negative consequences. Your assignment will be to investigate alternative solutions and calculate them structurally in order to design one in more detail. To achieve this, your activities will include:
- the design of concepts
- identifying the multiple criteria required
- design one concept in full detail
- FEM analysis and construction.
To be eligible for this position, you must have the following:
- be a BSc or MSc student in mechanical, maritime technology, material engineering or equivalent
- have a good command of the English language, both written and verbal
- have technical communication and documentation skills
- be flexible, motivated, proactive and willing to learn.

As a Alternative Barge Mooring System intern , you will work in the Engineering department within IHC Shipbuilding. The Shipbuilding group engineers and produces complex custom-built and standard offshore and dredging vessels.
