Goldhofer / SPMT | Hydraulic Gantry | Power Pack Units | Heavy Industrial Cranes

Mammoet USA is seeking skilled and safety-focused EMD Mechanics to support the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, testing, and preparation of specialized heavy-lift and heavy-transport equipment. Primary equipment includes Goldhofer Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs), hydraulic modular trailers, hydraulic gantry systems, Power Pack Units (PPUs), heavy industrial cranes, and associated lifting and transport equipment.

This position requires a strong combination of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, electronic control, diesel power, and diagnostic skills. The EMD Mechanic is expected to systematically identify root causes of complex equipment failures, interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics, and complete high-quality repairs in both workshop and field environments.

The EMD Mechanic supports equipment reliability and project readiness through preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, modifications, calibration, functional testing, equipment preparation, and field troubleshooting while ensuring work meets Mammoet safety, quality, and equipment standards.


WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Perform maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of Goldhofer SPMTs, modular trailers, hydraulic gantries, PPUs, heavy industrial cranes, and related heavy-lift equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic control, instrumentation, and power-unit failures using a systematic troubleshooting process.
  • Read and interpret hydraulic schematics, P&IDs, electrical wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic steering, suspension, leveling, lifting, drive, load-support, and synchronized lifting systems.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, accumulators, proportional valves, directional valves, pressure-control valves, manifolds, hoses, fittings, and related components.
  • Perform hydraulic pressure, flow, temperature, leakage, and system-performance testing.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot diesel-powered hydraulic PPUs, including engines, pumps, cooling systems, fuel systems, batteries, charging systems, starters, and related components.
  • Troubleshoot 12V and 24V DC electrical systems, wiring harnesses, connectors, relays, contactors, sensors, solenoids, switches, and control circuits.
  • Use multimeters and diagnostic equipment to perform voltage, resistance, continuity, and voltage-drop testing.
  • Diagnose remote-control, controller, sensor, proportional-control, CAN-based communication, and synchronization faults where applicable.
  • Perform steering, suspension, lifting-system, sensor, and control-system calibration and functional testing as required.
  • Inspect and repair SPMT wheel assemblies, planetary drives, bearings, steering components, suspension components, gearboxes, and power-transmission systems.
  • Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot hydraulic gantry lifting cylinders, tracks, rollers, wheels, structural connections, pins, bushings, locking systems, hydraulic manifolds, and controls.
  • Troubleshoot gantry lifting, lowering, synchronization, pressure-loss, cylinder-drift, slow-operation, and uneven-lifting conditions.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on heavy industrial crane hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot crane hoists, winches, drums, brakes, gearboxes, sheaves, wire rope, boom components, swing systems, travel systems, hydraulic circuits, and associated components.
  • Diagnose crane sensors, limit switches, load-monitoring systems, safety/interlock circuits, and electronic control-system faults.
  • Support crane assembly, disassembly, equipment preparation, inspections, and field repairs within the mechanic's assigned scope.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and detailed inspections to identify potential failures before equipment deployment.
  • Support equipment renovation, modification, rebuild, and new-build projects when required.
  • Prepare equipment for mobilization and project execution and verify operational and safety readiness.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection documentation, repair history, and equipment condition reports.
  • Work closely with operations, engineering, supervisors, operators, rigging personnel, and other mechanics to resolve equipment problems.
  • Provide field-service troubleshooting and emergency repair support at project locations as required.
  • Follow all Mammoet health, safety, environmental, quality, Lockout/Tagout, stored-energy, and equipment-control procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas and properly maintain tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Travel to project locations throughout the United States as required.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of relevant experience maintaining heavy equipment, heavy-transport equipment, industrial cranes, hydraulic lifting equipment, SPMTs, hydraulic gantries, or comparable complex equipment.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair capabilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, accumulators, steering systems, suspension systems, lifting systems, and hydraulic power units.
  • Ability to read and troubleshoot hydraulic schematics and P&IDs.
  • Experience performing hydraulic pressure and flow testing and diagnosing restriction, leakage, overheating, and contamination-related issues.
  • Experience troubleshooting 12V/24V DC electrical systems and ability to read electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Experience using multimeters and other electrical/hydraulic diagnostic equipment.
  • Understanding of sensors, solenoids, relays, switches, controllers, proportional controls, and electronic control systems.
  • Experience with diesel engines and diesel-powered hydraulic PPUs.
  • Ability to systematically isolate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic control, and instrumentation failures rather than relying solely on component replacement.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, equipment preparation, and functional testing.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices, Lockout/Tagout, stored hydraulic energy, suspended-load hazards, and heavy-equipment maintenance hazards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in workshop and field environments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively to project locations throughout the United States.
  • English proficiency, verbal and written.
  • Ability to complete Mammoet-required safety training and certifications.
Heavy Industrial Crane Qualifications (Great to have, but not required)
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting heavy industrial cranes, including crawler cranes, large hydraulic mobile cranes, or comparable heavy-lifting equipment.
  • Working knowledge of crane hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, control valves, accumulators, cooling systems, and filtration systems.
  • Experience inspecting and troubleshooting hoists, winches, brakes, gearboxes, drums, sheaves, wire rope, boom systems, and travel/swing systems.
  • Understanding of crane electrical and electronic control systems, sensors, limit switches, load-monitoring systems, and safety/interlock circuits.
  • Ability to troubleshoot crane hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and control-system faults using schematics and diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic PPUs, and power-transmission systems used in heavy lifting equipment.
  • Knowledge of crane inspection criteria and ability to identify mechanical, hydraulic, structural, or electrical conditions requiring repair or escalation.
  • Understanding of hazards associated with suspended loads, counterweights, boom systems, stored energy, crane assembly/disassembly, and heavy-lifting operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience maintaining or repairing Goldhofer SPMTs and hydraulic modular trailers.
  • Experience with Scheuerle, Cometto, or comparable SPMT/heavy-transport equipment.
  • Direct experience maintaining hydraulic gantry systems and synchronized hydraulic lifting equipment.
  • Experience maintaining diesel-powered hydraulic PPUs.
  • Experience with Liebherr, Manitowoc, Demag/Terex, Tadano, Grove, or comparable heavy industrial crane equipment.
  • Experience with proportional hydraulic controls and high-pressure hydraulic systems.
  • Knowledge of CAN bus, CANopen, J1939, PLC, or similar mobile/industrial equipment communication and control systems.
  • Experience diagnosing controller, I/O, sensor, remote-control, and communication faults.
  • Experience with hydraulic contamination control, filtration, flushing, and oil sampling.
  • Experience with crane assembly/disassembly, heavy lift, rigging, jacking, skidding, or heavy-haul operations.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Experience in construction, civil engineering, renewables, oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, offshore, ports, or mining environments.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal EMD Mechanic is a diagnostic technician who understands how hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, diesel power, instrumentation, and electronic control systems interact across complex heavy-lift and heavy-transport equipment.

A strong candidate can determine whether an equipment fault originates from a mechanical component, hydraulic circuit, electrical circuit, sensor or instrumentation feedback, electronic controller, communication network, power unit, or system calibration. The mechanic should be capable of moving from symptom to root cause rather than relying primarily on component replacement.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical judgment, attention to detail, safety awareness, equipment ownership, adaptability, and the ability to perform effectively in demanding heavy-lift, heavy-haul, workshop, and field-service environments.
