Senior Well Engineer ( Well Decommisioning )

Job descriptionAn operator in the energy sector is seeking an experienced Well Engineer to support a large-scale offshore well decommissioning campaign involving multiple mature assets. This position will play a key role throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept development and engineering design through procurement, operational execution, and final reporting.
Working closely with the Well Operations team, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe, efficient, and compliant plug and abandonment activities while ensuring operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
During the execution phase, the Well Engineer will participate in an operational duty rota, providing engineering support and decision-making assistance during critical activities.

Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Planning
  • Develop well abandonment and decommissioning designs.
  • Prepare detailed operational procedures and execution programs.
  • Support the creation of HSE and risk management documentation.
  • Conduct well barrier assessments and integrity reviews.
  • Participate in operational readiness reviews and planning workshops.
  • Review historical well data and incorporate findings into engineering designs.
  • Implement lessons learned to continuously improve operational performance.
Procurement & Logistics
  • Assist in identifying, specifying, and sourcing equipment, materials, and services.
  • Coordinate with procurement teams and service providers to ensure timely delivery.
  • Support logistics planning for personnel, vessels, equipment, and materials.
  • Verify availability and readiness of required contractors and resources.
Operational Support
  • Provide engineering oversight during offshore decommissioning activities.
  • Monitor operational performance and adherence to approved programs.
  • Support management of change processes when operational adjustments are required.
  • Ensure well control systems and safety-critical equipment remain fit for purpose.
  • Coordinate activities between contractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor contractor performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Raise non-conformance reports where required and follow up on corrective actions.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management
  • Ensure activities are performed in accordance with company standards, procedures, permits, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain close collaboration with project teams, service providers, and operational personnel.
  • Provide clear technical direction to contractors and third-party service companies.
  • Ensure all work is conducted safely and efficiently while meeting project objectives.
  • Support continuous communication between engineering and operations teams.

Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE)
  • Champion a strong safety culture throughout all project activities.
  • Ensure risks are identified, assessed, and appropriately mitigated.
  • Promote the use of safety management systems and operational risk controls.
  • Lead by example in safe working practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable industry regulations, policies, and procedures.

Reporting & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate well files, records, and engineering documentation.
  • Prepare operational programs and supporting technical documents for review and approval.
  • Capture and communicate lessons learned throughout the project.
  • Produce detailed end-of-well and project close-out reports.
  • Ensure all operational data is stored and managed in accordance with company requirements.

Job requirementsRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or another relevant technical discipline.
  • Valid Well Control certification (IWCF Level 4 or higher, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in well engineering, drilling, workover, intervention, or decommissioning operations.
  • Combination of office-based engineering experience and field operational exposure.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with well plug and abandonment activities.
  • Knowledge of offshore well decommissioning projects.
  • Understanding of well integrity and well barrier management principles.
  • Familiarity with casing, cementing, wellheads, and production tree systems.
  • Experience with slickline, braided line, and electric line operations.
  • Experience preparing detailed operational procedures and well programs.
  • Previous responsibility for creating technical and end-of-well reports.
  • Exposure to offshore drilling, intervention, or workover operations.
